I am very glad to see that the Local Government Secretary and Economy Secretary Ken Skates has quickly responded to my recent letter calling for a “business revolution”.
Back at the end of July, after consultations with local small businesses in Wrexham, I wrote a letter to the Cabinet Secretary asking for the Welsh Government to support small businesses by cutting rates relief and red tape.
This may be regarded as a step in the right direction, but frankly the policy does not go far enough. To sort a cap at £12,000 excludes a lot of high street businesses struggling to survive. We still don’t have details on what the new rateable values will be for next year, but from businesses I’ve spoken to, far from being optimistic about this announcement, they are still concerned that hard times are ahead. We have an opportunity in Wales to be the most business friendly country in the UK, if not in Europe, and I strongly think that is an approach we should adopt with conjoined policy making to really help boost the economy.
Let me know in the comments below if the continuation of small business rates relief will benefit your business.
